birdy break

Took a birdy break this afternoon while working at home.

Birds #1: wild birds.  I refilled both bird feeders–sunflower seed and thistle seed.  They have been in high demand given the cold and windy days all month.  We’ve even had these big flocks of various finches (mostly house finches, but sometimes a mixed flock of several different kinds of finches) raiding the thistle feeder all at once.   Ten of them on the small feeder plus another dozen or two scattered on the deck, the snow, the railings, the other bird feeder.

Birds #2: hens.  I visited the chickens for the first time in a few days.  When I work at the office, I often don’t manage to see them.  Even when I work from home, I frequently get fixated on too many wage work tasks and forget to take a break.  But this afternoon I remembered and hung out with them in the coop for a few minutes.  I had intended to bring them the “chicken compost” scraps, but Ron helpfully brought them treats earlier in the afternoon.  I just hung out in the coop, Beaker and Cleo munched on the snow stuck on my boots, I held Ella, and Caroline wandered into the greenhouse.  Oops.
