We’re in a long spell of cloudy, gray weather. This is the kind of weather everyone complains about in Ithaca. And they complain that Ithaca is “always” like this. Not True.
But we are having a relatively long, uninterrupted period of gray skies. It was a week ago Sunday that we had a decent amount of sun–that is, er, 12 days ago!?
The sun peeked out for about 10 minutes late this morning. Fortunately, I was running for most of it. But everyone is ready for more sunshine.
Including the solar hot water heater. We’ve gotten no free hot water for almost two weeks now. If we had solar photo voltaic panels, we wouldn’t be getting free electricity either. It also means that we are getting almost no passive solar heating in the house to supplement the masonry stove. All of our heat is stove-produced these days. Fortunately, the stove is a workhorse and can heat the entire house pretty comfortably even sans sunshine. But passive solar is real heat boost. We estimate we gain about 10 degrees inside on a long sunny day from the passive solar alone.
We’re supposed to get some sun tomorrow, but clouds are then due return. Ithaca earns this reputation for times like these, which isn’t entirely fair. But it is hard to be an Ithaca weather defender on day #12 of cloudy, gray skies.
PS – Beaker is the egger-egg layer culprit. Saw her snuggled in a corner of the coop early this afternoon. She was definitely trying to lay another egg!
