Yesterday Caroline laid her first egg in several months. Biologically she’s done being a hen-mom, and she’s acting that way, too. She seemed to be pacing the inside of the mobile coop last night and again this morning, and she was squawking her head off. I decided to let her outside for a bit. That seemed to make her a lot happier, but the chick less so. It was peeping loudly and began to pace now that Caroline was outside the mobile coop and it was still inside.
The good news is that we’re back to 6 laying hens and our egg carton shows it. But now we’re trying to figure out what’s best for the chickie since chickens are flock animals and I don’t think it’s going to be very happy by itself. For tonight we’re going to snag Caroline and put her back in the coop for the night. It’s supposed to be in the upper 40s. Not sure, though, how this will work over the next few weeks since it’s still too soon to introduce the almost-adolescent chicken to the rest of the flock.
