We went to a mini work party at our berry CSA last evening. Part of the deal of the berry CSA is that you agree to do 3 hours labor over the course of the CSA; otherwise you pay a little extra for your share. The owner really needs member labor to run the whole thing because one person can’t cultivate and maintain something like 10 acres of berries.
We, like most CSAers, were behind on our hours so the CSA owner organized a work party to get Some Work Done. It was a nice evening to be outside and work, but I wasn’t really in the mood to chat with some of the talkative other helpers. Mostly I wanted to weed and listen to the birds.
This morning I was thinking it would be really nice to have a work party at White Pine Farm, too. We’re both feeling pretty stretched thin these days.
There’s garden maintenance–mostly weeding but some other tasks.
There’s garden harvesting–mostly greens (chard, kale, lettuce with arugula and spinach on the way out) with beets and green beans on the horizon.
Ergo, there’s garden processing–mostly freezing.
There’s berries galore. The berry CSA is in peak production mode. This week’s share was 7 pints of gooseberries, 10 quarts of red currants, and 1 pint of red raspberries! We picked only 6 quarts of the currants and deferred the rest to next week when we’ll have a double whammy of red and black currants.
Hence, there could be jam galore, but we’re, er, jammed up with house work these days so I tucked the red currants in the freezer, put the gooseberries in the fridge, and hope to manage to make gooseberry jam this weekend. I’m not sure if we have freezer space for next week’s currants and I’d like to avoid turning on the separate freezer given the impending move.
And then, of course, there’s the lovely, beautiful, amazing, incredible, one-of-a-kind house!
Along with the assorted final construction bits, cleaning, and pre-moving prep that ideally all need to happen in the next 10 days.
It’s an embarrassment of riches, a real blessing–I’m trying to hang onto this–and a lot of work.
Work party anyone?
