tough chicks

The “polar vortex” continues.  Apparently all 50 states, including Hawaii (!!), experienced freezing temperatures at some point yesterday.  (This is according to an AOL headline, hardly a reliable source, I know).

It was -3 F when I was walking from my car to the office at 8:45 yesterday morning and a whopping 6 F when I got back to the car at 5:00 that afternoon.  But these temperatures do not include wind chill and a stiff, biting breeze was blowing for much of yesterday.  The local newspapers report wind chill factors of -25 F, even -34 F in the region.

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Meanwhile, the chickens have been cooped up and are starting to pick on one another, especially when one of them is trying to lay an egg.  Ron opened the door around 3:00pm to see if they wanted out.  Despite the temperature–and probably more significantly, the wind–all of them went outside in the garden until dusk.

Those are tough, hardy–um, hearty??–chickens!
