the miracle of (not) passive solar, II: or, what happens when the window manufacturer does indeed put the wrong glass in the south-facing windows

Yup.  Ron was right.  The window manufacturer put the wrong glass in all our south-facing windows.  I won’t go into the details here, but we special ordered all the windows: size for all windows, upstate-New-York-appropriate passive solar for the ones on the south side.

Mais non.

What they did was manage to get all the sizes right (yay!), but they put Las Vegas-appropriate passive solar on the south side.  The wrong glass.  And this ain’t Vegas, folks (see earlier posts re: cold, snow, cooped up chickens and humans, etc.).

So, needless to say, the manufacturer is fixing the problem–for free.  All those (wrong) sashes (the square part of the windows that move up/down for you non-techie folks) will be replaced–for free.  However, it will probably take at least several weeks for them to be made and shipped given the holidays.  Then someone will install them all–for free.

And all the wrong sashes will “go away” to the landfill.

Passive solar = reduce carbon footprint.

Wrong windows = fill up the landfill.

SIGH.

The good news: Ron was right and caught the enormous mistake right away (we have more windows on the south side than the other three walls combined!!).  The manufacturer will fix everything.  But I hate that all those sashes are going to the landfill.

You can’t see the wrong windows in this photo, but here’s a recent photo of the house–in the snow with partly sunny skies.  You can see the mudroom on the north side plus the siding (in progress…).  And the (right) windows and front door.
