We let the chickens in the garden for the first time yesterday. They looked like they were having so much fun. So many bugs and seeds and greens to eat, and so much dirt and straw to dig around in. And it was a gorgeous late fall day: only in the 50s, but sunny and no wind so it felt much warmer.
Only problem is that the phrase “bird-brained” exists for a reason. Yesterday afternoon Ella and Heidi, and then all six chickens this morning, were having a hard time figuring out how to get back into the orchard and coop. They forgot where the door between the garden and orchard was. Cute and sweet, but, um, not too smart… Fortunately, they tend to follow us so we were able to “walk” them back into the orchard. Oy.
